Plannning an Event - Test Case

The Salsa Lounge - 'Beta Test'

Well in one week La Villa Basque will be moving to the Latin Beat of Salsa, Cumbia, and maybe some Meringue. So this is our 'Test Case' or Beta Test for planing an Event.

We are doing everything everyone else does. We are on My Space, Face Book, Hey you twitter bugs out there, we are printing cards, fliers, E-Blasting. On the streets getting the word out. Are we doing all?

What more can we do to insure that the place is jamming, people are drinking, and having a 'I gotta tell my friends about this' experience. First we got to make it easy to get them in. We do have a great undiscovered location. As I like to say, by the time you find a parking spot in Hollywood you are already seated and having a nice drink at La Villa Basque.

PARKING! AND EASY ACCESS. That's what I want when I go out. I don't want to spend gas driving around finding parking then walk half a mile, get to a club, pay 20 bucks and stand waiting for a drink.

I may be bit older but after working I want to relax, I want friendly people who understand how I feel, who deep down kinda care about me. I can tell if they do. What about you? Help me out tell me what you are looking for in a club. I need to know. I want to do it right. I love a place where people feel at home and make you feel at home...

Planning an Event

Part 1 - Profiling

So you want to start a club, have a weekly dance, showcase some talent, have a monthly networking event.

Where do you start? How do find people who have the energy after a long day or week to attend your event. And once you find them how can you guarantee they show up? Hmmm.
Let's start by looking at a club. Actors, they love meeting, they love talking, performing, networking. They love clubs. So we want to start a Club for Actors.

Great! Let's go on Facebook, Craigslist, and My Space and start a club set a date and wait for the crowds to show...
Will it work? I don't know, you tell me.
We've set our first meeting for thursday, 7p. But before we send out the e-vites, let's profile a couple of our members.

Suzy - 34 - Singer, Dancer, Actress, been in many plays, couple of bit parts in a movie. Waiting for the big break. She'll show right?

She is also a divorced mother of 2. She works as a receptionist for a Studio in Burbank from 9-5, and lives in Downey. She'll show right? Hmmm.

Edward - 22 - Actor, Writer, studying full time at USC film school. Is taking a class in Acting and has to perform for his final. Doesn't have a car, relies on his friends for rides. Will he show?

Olivia - 50 - Actor, Director, Teacher. Teaches at Long Beach College, is done by 3pm. Has an agent, is attending auditions regularly. Kids are in college, daughter is also an actor. Will She show?

I have been to writers groups, actors groups, screenings, meetings, etc. And some, most I will never return to, why? Cause when I get home I am exhausted and the thought of going out -- I'd rather watch a movie and drink a beer...Help me!
What can you do to get me out of my apartment and to your meeting. Let's look at some of the ways we can coax people out of their comfort zone and into your event.

Actors & Writers Unite!

No, we are not a union. We want to see writers words come alive through the actor's tools. Screenwriters, Poets, Actors, Film Makers, come on over to La Villa Basque and let's have some fun, and hone our art. If you have a club or a group of friends from school, La Villa Basque is a perfect place to perform. We have many different areas. Take a look at www.lavillabasque.com

A Place For Networking

Are you a Twitter Newbie? At the bottom of the Blog is a Video for those of us who want to learn about Twitter.

Restaurants, Lounges, and Coffee Shops can be great places for hosting your networking group.
If -- you pick the right place. You favorite bar with the hottest dudes or chicks may not be the place to further your business or career. A crowded loud coffee shop with the best vanilla lattes may not work either. So -- what do you look for? Having spent the last 20 years behind bars....I mean working in bars I have listed things I would consider.
  1. Location - Is it twenty minutes or less from the bulk of your group? What about access to major freeways? Hollywood is great but you ever driven down sunset during rush hour?

  2. Parking - Plenty of free parking is great, espcially in city areas.

  3. Ambience - Noise Level, Lighting, Crowd. Is it easy to hear each other? Can you see the face of those you converse with? Is the crowd loud, obnoxious?

  4. Space - Depending on the size of your group, what kind of space can you get? A private room would be ideal. Free internet? Large tables? Or cocktail tables to pull together? Time, how long can you keep the space?
  5. Management - This is the key to it all. Will the management work with you. If you just starting out you may only have 10 people show up. Does management demand a minumum for the space or are they flexible, willing to work with you?

We hosted a real estate Mixer at La Villa Basque. Not too many people showed up. We are trying to attract group, club, and corporate business so we want to work with group and help them grow - help them to succeed. We may have just covered our costs but a few more people saw La Villa Basque and what we have to offer.
